Understanding Shoulder Complexities and Injury Management

Shoulder Care

The shoulder – it's a marvel of mobility, allowing us to reach for the stars, throw a ball with power, and even just comfortably scratch our backs. But with such impressive range and with repetitive use comes the potential for things to go wrong.

Think of your shoulder not just as a single joint, but as a complex team working in perfect harmony. The glenohumeral joint (that's the main ball and socket) is supported and powered by a network of muscles, tendons, and ligaments. The rotator cuff muscles – a group of four key players – are crucial for stability and smooth movement. The larger muscles like the deltoids, pecs, and traps contribute to power and broader movements.

To add to complexity in the sports and exercise physiotherapy world we say the the shoulder starts from the ground. The entire kinetic chain is what allows the shoulder to generate power for sports, but kinks in this same kinetic chain may also influence the shoulder and lead to pain.

Our approach to managing shoulder injuries at Top Performance Physio Chatswood is holistic, as we endeavor to address the shoulder itself, as well as the biomechanical contributing factors that could be further compounding the condition. We then aid in transitioning you back to your chosen activity or sport.
